Rejected at 17…
I applied to art school when I was 17.
Straight out of high school.
Nervous.
I brought work I believed in.
Work that looked finished.
Work that should have been enough.
I walked out of the selection room, and they told me I didn’t make it.
It wasn’t about talent.
It wasn’t even about the work.
They told me something else.
A reason I couldn’t accept at the time.
A reason that , over time, changed how I understand “good” art now.
Because the work can be competent and still feel quiet.
Not because you lack skill.
Because you’re not fully in it yet.
What they said to me that day is the same thing I think about when an artist tells me,
I’m too old.
It’s too late.
Here’s the 2-minute studio note I recorded for you.
One question: When did you first start believing it was too late for you?
Leave one sentence. I read them.
