When ‘fine’ is a trap…
There’s a kind of painting that looks like a solution.
It’s not awful. It’s not that bad.
So you keep going.
You try to make a better version.
A more correct version.
A version that proves you can do it.
But the strange part is: the more you try to prove it, the quieter the work gets. And with every stroke it becomes less yours.
That is because the work isn’t asking for more effort.
It’s asking for presence.
And presence doesn’t come from checking.
Or apologizing.
Or trying to make it acceptable.
It comes from being willing to take up space on the canvas.
That’s the part most of us were trained out of.
Not on purpose. It just happened.
And it’s not your fault. It happens to almost every artist… this is the one question that can bring you back to the work.
